Turning crop and forest residues in rural communities into
carbon-negative bioproducts.

We develop technology that drastically scales the transformation of waste biomass into marketable bio-products for rural communities to combat air pollution, catastrophic wildfires, and climate change.

Awards and Recognitions

Climate Challenge

Most crop and forest residues (biomass) are loose, wet, and bulky, making them difficult and expensive to collect and transport. As such, most rural, underserved communities are often shut out from the benefits of the bioeconomy, and their only recourse is to burn their residues in open air, resulting in significant pollution and increased risks for catastrophic wildfires.

The Takachar Solution

Our small scale, low-cost, portable equipment upgrades waste agricultural and forest residues into a carbon-rich feedstock on-site into higher-value bioproducts such as fertilizer blends, chemicals, and biofuels. Our solution, with roots in research conducted at MIT, aims to decentralize bio-product production using a combination of easy-to-use hardware and IoT-based control systems. Our portable system can be carried from farm to farm to locally densify and upgrade small pockets of residues.

Impact

By building self-sufficient rural communities less dependent on imported and carbon-intensive chemical alternatives, and by connecting them with the lucrative carbon market for the first time, we build lasting environmental justice.

Carbon Removal and Climate Justice

By sequestering carbon-rich fertilizer blend into the soil, we have potential to remove gigatonnes of CO2-equivalent. By reducing open-air biomass burning and chemical manufacturing/transportation, we avoid additional greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, we uniquely advance climate justice by enabling rural, underserved communities verify and earn carbon credits for the first time.
